Excellent Ways to Prepare for a Kitchen Inspection

Restaurants often have sanitation department officials stopping by to conduct routine inspections. A bad grade could severely damage an establishment’s reputation or shut down the place entirely. Therefore, you want to make sure you take care of a few things first. It will give you peace of mind the next time a health inspector comes to visit.

1. Get Your Appliances Serviced

You want to get a professional commercial appliance service regularly to make sure everything is working as it should. You do not want to inconvenience your customers by being unable to use the stove. However, appliance services are also for safety reasons. Your refrigerator and freezer need to be at optimal temperatures to keep food sanitary. You should even take this practice a step further and record the internal temperatures of food, and keep the list by the fridge.

2. Promote Employee Hygiene

One of the simplest ways to prevent the spread of bacteria is for employees to practice good hygiene. You should have signs placed in the bathroom informing employees to wash their hands before returning to work. Rubber gloves may need to be worn when preparing certain dishes. Hair nets are great investments, and any injuries on the arms or hands need to be addressed immediately.

3. Sanitize Equipment and Kitchen Surfaces

Utensils and cutting boards need to be cleaned often whether that means washing them by hand or putting them in a dishwasher. You should ensure food preparation surfaces are cleaned frequently. That means cleaning them after every dish. You do not want to risk cross-contamination by preparing raw meat and raw vegetables on the same surface without washing first. Spills on the floor need to be cleaned up as soon as possible to prevent slips and falls.

4. Conduct Proper Housekeeping

Everything needs to be stored in its proper place. That means if you use cleaning chemicals, the bottles need to be stored in a different location then where you put the food. You should also set aside time each day to clean the restaurant. This could be after the business has closed for the day, but a clean restaurant will impress both customers and health inspectors.

Keep your employees and the community at large safe by preparing food properly. You will earn a much better reputation, and you will not have to worry about getting written up for an easily fixable problem.
