Tips for Choosing the Perfect Restaurant Grease Trap

At CASCO, we not only service and repair all manner of restaurant equipment, we also do our part to help educate our customers so they’re able to get more out of their equipment. If you’ve just opened your own restaurant or are thinking about doing so in the future, you’ll want to look into getting a grease trap, taking steps to make sure you have the right size. Learn more about grease traps and why they’re so essential to the proper operation of your new business.

What Is a Grease Trap?

A grease trap is exactly what it sounds like: a trap that collects grease. You don’t want any grease that goes down the sink to make its way into your plumbing system; otherwise, you’ll likely need commercial appliance service. The way grease traps work is they slow down the flow of water so that any oil, fat or grease poured down the sink has a chance to cool and collect and remain in the trap.

Why Do You Need a Grease Trap?

The main reason you need a grease trap is so oil, grease and fat don’t get stuck in your plumbing system where they can solidify and lead to clogs, backed up sinks and all manner of other avoidable problems. Such problems can negatively impact the operation of your business and can be quite unsanitary as well. Finally, you don’t want to waste money on avoidable plumbing repairs.

How Do You Select the Right Grease Trap Size?

A few of the main factors that determine the size grease trap you need for your restaurant include:
  • The number of sinks you have
  • Your commercial dishwasher
  • Your glass washer

The overall size of the trap is determined by the number of gallons of water flowing down your drains, which is your rate of incoming flow. You’ll also want to make sure your grease trap’s rated capacity is twice your flow rate. For instance, the rated capacity of a 20 gallon per minute (GPM) grease trap is 40 pounds.

How Do You Maintain Your Grease Trap?

Once you have the right grease trap for your establishment, it’s essential you take proper care of it. This means regularly cleaning it out and using either drain maintainer or cleaners. We’d be more than happy to help you maintain and service your grease traps for optimum performance.

It's great that this article talks about how it's important to regularly clean out the grease trap and use either drain maintainer or cleaners. In order to make sure you have the right equipment to do this and use the best methods, it would probably be a good idea to hire a professional. When hiring a professional to care for your grease trap, you'd probably want to find one that is located near your building so that you can have them quickly come over whenever you require their services.

Thank you for explaining that a grease trap is there to prevent oil, grease, and fat from solidifying and causing backups in the plumbing. My sister is planning on starting her business, but I don't know if she has been looking into a grease trap and the maintenance required. I will be sure that she reads this article, and finds someone that can maintain them once she buys them.

I liked that you mentioned a grease trap will prevent oil, grease, and fat from getting stuck in your plumbing system. My father bought a restaurant recently, and we are looking for advice to help him with the remodeling process. I will let him know about the importance of installing a grease trap to prevent problems with his plumbing system.

I thought it was interesting when you explained that the number of sinks in a facility will help determine the size of the grease trap that is needed. I would think that this kind of device would need to be cleaned out on a fairly regular basis when being used in a restaurant or a similar business. It would be interesting to learn more about how grease traps are cleaned.

You made a good point when you shared that it is important to consider some factors that determine the size grease trap you need for your restaurant. This includes the number of sink that you have, as well as the commercial dishwasher. I would like to think if a restaurant owner needs to get a grease trap, it should consider some factors and get the right one from a reliable service.

I want to make sure that I don't have too much grease build up in my kitchen. It makes sense that I would want to get grease traps installed. That seems like a great way to ensure that the grease doesn't cause any problems in the long run.

I can understand how a business could really benefit from getting the right equipment for their restaurant in order to be more effective. Making sure that they can get some help from a professional could allow them to be more productive. I liked what you said about how the grease trap can be used to collect grease, and the size can be determined by the number of sinks that they have.

It was interesting to read about how a grease trap collects thinks like oil and fat so that they don't end up in your plumbing system. It seems like a grease trap would need to have some kind of filter so that food items can't get stuck in your plumbing as well. I would imagine that food often will often end up going down the sinks in a restaurant, so having some kind of filter in place would probably be important.
