Top Four Reasons Commercial Ovens Stop Working

Broken Oven
When you are in the restaurant service business, the last dilemma you need is a commercial oven that malfunctions. Pinpointing the reason that it stops working is crucial to getting your business to get back up and working again as promptly as possible. The first and most critical measure is always to make sure that gas lines and electric power supplies are turned off to the unit before doing any work.

Tips for Diagnosing Common Issues

The four most common reasons that commercial ovens stop working include:

  • Faulty pilot lights: A pilot light that is not placed directly in a flame is unable to produce enough heat to keep the safety valve open. The result is a pilot that will not stay lit and is indicative of a potentially defective thermocouple. You will probably need to replace it.

  • Oven will not reach the proper temperature: All thermostats are factory preset and ordinarily do not require calibration. However, if your oven does not reach the set temperature, the thermostat is either out of calibration, broken, or faulty.  Regardless, replacing the thermostat should remedy this situation.

  • Oven is too hot: If you oven overheats, this also indicates a calibration issue with your thermostat. Replacing the thermostat will allow your oven to heat to the correct temperature.

  • Oven does not cook evenly: A common problem after installing a new thermostat is uneven cooking. An improperly located bulb that senses heat cannot accurately detect the temperature. Ensuring that the bulb is in the right place should correct this problem.

Thank you for informing me that an oven that overheats is often a sign of a damaged thermostat. About a week ago, I was at my sister's house for a very fancy dinner. We decided that she should start a restaurant because she is such a fantastic cook! I want to help her on this journey so I will help her make sure she knows when things need repairing. I guess I should also look for repair companies for when she needs them.

Thank you for mentioning how an overheating oven may indicate that you need to replace your thermostat since it may have a calibration problem. My uncle has been planning on opening an Italian restaurant this summer but has noticed that one of his ovens causes his chicken to burn after a few minutes. Maybe he should find some professionals that can help repair his damaged equipment.

It stood out to me when you talked about how it is a good idea to replace pilot lights that have a faulty thermocouple. With that in mind, it would probably be a good idea to contact an appliance repair technician if you have a commercial oven that needs to be repaired. Your business depends on the oven, so you would want to make sure that it is fixed properly.

Thank you for stating that a pilot light not in close contact with a flame cannot generate sufficient heat to maintain the safety valve open. My sister's oven's pilot light doesn't stay lit, which may be a sign of a faulty thermocouple. I'll advise her to fix the pilot light on the range stove.
